UNIT 2 - INDUSTRIALIZATION COMES TO AMERICA
UNIT BACKGROUND: The First Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain during the late 18th century and sparked a period of technologically, economic, intellectual , and societal growth that has been unparalleled throughout the course of human history. By the 19th century, the period that is now referred to as the Second Industrial Revolution had taken hold in the United States and helped propel America to the top of the international food chain. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the United States had become the leading industrial nation in the world. Inventions and innovations such as, the assembly line, bessemer process, telephone, and steamship revolutionized American society. Americans began to flock to major urban cities and leave the farms behind. It was also during this time that big business blossomed as "captains of industry," such as, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Levi Strauss and J.P. Morgan cemented their place as some of the most influential and powerful people in not only America, but the entire world.
