Course Description: Civics is a half-year state required course designed
to teach students the role of government in their lives, and their role within
government. Since the beginning of
civilizations, humans have aimed to create order and structure within their
societies. Students will examine through
personal connections, the forming of the American government and its
progression over the last 238 years.
During this course, students will learn different methods of civic
action at the local, state, and federal levels of government and explore how
those actions influence the both structure of government and the larger
society.

Units of Study
- Unit 1: Geography – Students will learn what geography is, the seven continents will be reviewed and map skills will be taught.
- Unit 2: The American Dream – Students will learn about the origins of American government.
- Unit 3: The Constitution and Amendments- Students will learn about the Bill of Rights, the United States Constitution and the Amendments within.
- Unit 4: Governmental Structure and its Impact on Our Lives – Students will gain an understanding of Federal and Local governments, as well as the 3 Branches and their roles.
- Unit 5: Political Parties and the Election Process – Students will learn about political parties, the election process and the art of debate.
- Unit 6: Citizenship and Your Rights – Students will learn about the rights of American citizens, as well as their own responsibility as citizens.
