UNIT 1 - RECONSTRUCTION
Unit Background: In this unit, students will examine the Reconstruction era, which was one of the most polarizing periods in U.S. history. The Reconstruction era began with the end of the Civil War in 1865 and ended with the election of Rutherford B. Hayes to the presidency in 1877. While the overarching goal of Reconstruction was to re-unite the nation following a long and brutal civil war, the period was anything but peaceful. The nation was bitterly divided over how to effectively re-unite the nation. Moderates led by President(s) Lincoln and Johnson advocated treating the returning Confederate states and people with leniency and understanding. This approach was in start contrast to Republicans in Congress who became known as Radical Republicans because they advocated a hardline or "radical" approach to Reconstruction that called for the South to be punished for the war.
